We will offer periods of sitting and walking medita- tions throughout the day, some instruction and a Dharma talk. There will also be a period of guided reconciliation and forgiveness practice, honoring the Jewish holy day of Yom Kippur.

Retreat Center Update

7/21/11

Fundraising Update
We’re happy to announce that thanks to the $500,000 matching pledge, we have now raised $1,077,000!  Thank you to all who have contributed to the Insight Retreat Center!

Our goal is $2.3 million. If you’re considering a major donation and would like to discuss it, please contact us.
A donation would be most helpful at this time as we’d like to complete our renovation before we begin to hold retreats. You can donate here.

Open House was a great success!
Over 175 people attended the Open House. We had an amazing inspiring day filled with goodwill and appreciation. There was a rich mixing of sangha members who came not only from the Santa Cruz and Redwood City communities, but also from the greater Bay Area.

Those who attended toured the buildings and grounds and were apprised of the renovation plans. Some went on a tour of the now former “secret gardens”. ;-) Delicious food was provided, including home-made cupcakes and snacks made by volunteers who spent the previous day baking!

Volunteering
We are grateful to all the dedicated volunteers who have been gardening, cleaning, painting and making repairs. Working together this way is developing a meaningful bond between our sanghas.
For those of you who have not yet volunteered, but would like to do so, please fill out our volunteer form.

Construction Documents
We are working with our architect on the construction documents. We expect they will be completed within a month, at which time we will be able to submit them to the county for approval. We hope to begin our renovation in October and to hold our first retreat by June 2012.

Fundraising Update, Open House…

Dear All,

Below is a brief update of our developing Insight Retreat Center.

Fundraising Update
Only one month into our campaign we have received $381,000 in donations. Thanks to the matching pledge we have now raised $762,000. We’d like to reach $1 million by mid-July. It means we need to raise $124,000, as that amount will be matched.  (Total goal is $2.3 million.)

If you’re considering donating, this is the time that it’s most helpful. We’d like to complete our renovation before we begin to hold retreats. If you’d like to discuss this further, please contact us.

Open House: Saturday July 16, 10am to 5pm.
1906 Glen Canyon Rd, Santa Cruz map
Join us to tour the facility and grounds and learn of our plans. Refreshments will be served. Please try to carpool if possible.

You can drop by any time during the day.  Carpools from IMC will be leaving IMC at 9 am, 10:30 am and 1 pm.  Please sign up at IMC or with Debra.
Carpool or questions, email Debra Chromczak or 831/421-0876.

New Managers and Work Days
We’re beginning to gradually get organized. We very much appreciate the volunteers who are taking integral roles in developing our center.

3 New Managers
• Housekeeping Manager: Kim McLaughlin
• Landscape Manager: Betsy Blessing
• Facilities co-managers: Ted Wall and Jim Stimmell
• Current Caretakers: Barb and Ted Wall

Work Days: We’ve had a couple of wonderful work weekends at the center. It was very joyful having all the volunteers taking care of our new center, making connections, getting to know each other. It brought a beautiful blending of the Santa Cruz and IMC communities, and a real sense that this is our home.

  • Next “Cleaning Work Day“: Sunday June 26, please contact Kim McLaughlin for details.
  • Painting:  if you’d like to help paint, please contact David

Volunteer: If you’d like to volunteer and haven’t yet filled out a form, please do so here.  Volunteer Form

Request: Futons/Mattresses

Dear All,

Since we will be doing a major remodel starting October, we don’t want to purchase beds until the renovation is complete. But in the meantime we have temporary caretakers and working guests who need a comfortable place to sleep.

If you have a futon or mattress which is in good shape that you would be willing to donate or loan to us, we would very much appreciate it. Please send me an email and I’ll have someone make arrangements with you. Also let me know if you are able to drop it off or need it picked up.

Thank you,

Ines Freedman, Managing Director, IRC

It’s Official!

Dear All,

Escrow closed yesterday, and we are taking possession of our new retreat center today! We’ll be spending the next few weeks getting oriented and learning about the property. Barb and Ted Wall are caretaking for the next few months as we continue with the remodeling plans and organizing volunteers to take care of the gardening and maintain the property. If you are interested in volunteering please fill out our Volunteer Form.

We plan an open house on Saturday July 16 from 10 am to 5 pm. Mark your calendar.  We’ll send an announcement again when we have more info, as we’d like to encourage carpooling.

We’ll let you know how our fundraising efforts are going in about a week or so.

Thank you all for your support,

Fundraising Update

Dear All,

Great news! Our fundraising launch began May 14, with a sangha member’s most generous offer of a $500,000 matching pledge! Every dollar donated will be matched up to $500,000.

We had a wonderful celebration Saturday night, with beautiful music, and great food. We are grateful for the hard work of all the volunteers that made it possible and for all those that attended. There was a palpable feeling of warmth and community. For those of you who missed it, you can hear  Gil’s talk from that evening on Audio Dharma.

Updates of our fundraising progress will soon be available on our IRC website.

With Appreciation,

Ines Freedman

Retreat Center Permit Approved

Dear All,

We’re very happy to let you know that Santa Cruz County has approved our use permit for our retreat center.  Escrow is scheduled to close May 31st.

It’s exciting working with our architect on our construction documents, designing the meditation hall, walking-meditation hall, 26 more bedrooms, new shower facilities, kitchen expansion and more.

As I’ve mentioned, we are launching our fundraising campaign at our celebration on May 14 and hope to raise the funds so we can begin the renovation of the building as soon as our construction documents are finished and approved by the county.

We appreciate all of you who volunteered to help, and hope to be in touch this summer.
